When an assignment has been graded in Grade Book but not yet published, the grade is calculated into the final marking period grade, but is NOT visible in OnCourse Connect. This can be a bit confusing for students and guardians who see a change to their final grade but cannot see the assignment grade. The new Grading-in-Progress Indicator feature solves this issue.
When this feature is activated, parents and students will see this icon on the Academic History tab in OnCourse Connect when a Grade Book assignment has been graded but not published. Clicking the icon shows the progress report, including all published assignments for the selected class.
Clarification on Published Assignments
As you know, assignments can be created in Grade Book or Classroom. However, for a Classroom-created assignment to count toward the final grade and be visible in OnCourse Connect, it MUST be linked to Grade Book.
Here are the different ways to make assignments visible on OnCourse Connect:
- OnCourse Grade Book
- If an assignment is created in Grade Book, it is automatically published for all students by default and will be visible in OnCourse Connect when the assignment grades are entered into Grade Book.
- OnCourse Classroom
- As long as a Classroom assignment was linked to Grade Book, it will be published to Grade Book and visible in OnCourse Connect only after it has been Returned to ALL students.
- However, if a Grade Book-linked Classroom assignment is Returned to one or more (but not all) students, it will NOT be automatically published to Grade Book and the assignment will be visible on OnCourse Connect ONLY for students whose assignment was returned.

Workaround
If you don't want to turn on the Grading-in-Progress Indicator, a workaround is to mark an assignment as "non-calculated" until all grades are given and the teacher is ready to return the assignment. This way, the non-calculated assignment will not affect the final grade calculation. Later, the teacher can uncheck "non-calculated", making the assignment a calculated assignment that will be averaged into the final grade calculation.
