Teachers using OnCourse Classroom can now mark assignments as "Missing", which will display a new indicator to students and parents.
Notes:
- This is especially useful for students who press the "Mark Done" button* without submitting their assignment. (see footnote for more information on this)
- This feature only works for Classroom assignments that are connected to the Grade Book
How it Works
If a student does not turn in an assignment or turns in a blank assignment:
- Open the assignment
- Right-click in the grade area (see yellow arrow)
- Set the assignment as Missing
- This will display the assignment as Missing (or repost it, if necessary) in OnCourse Connect for the student and the parent
- If there is time remaining for the student to complete the assignment, and the teacher has not completed the grade, the student can resubmit
- If the Missing designation is not cleared by the teacher, the student will see this indicator in their assignments list (shown below)
- Note: Teacher can also mark the assignment as Late and Incomplete. Choosing these options will display a Late or Incomplete Indicator on the student/parent progress report, but will not trigger a special indicator in OnCourse Classroom like Missing does. The reason is because a Late/Incomplete assignment is generally considered submitted and should receive a grade, and should not be posted for possible resubmission, like a Missing assignment would.

* FAQ: Why are students allowed to press a "Mark Done" button without submitting an assignment?
Often, teachers may post an assignment that doesn't require an uploaded submission, like "Read Pages 3-8" or "Write three sentences about X." In these cases, the Mark Done button gives the student a quick way to indicate completion.
Why do students press Mark Done before they are actually done? Sometimes to hide the assignment from a parent or to attempt to circumvent the system. This new feature solves the "hide from parent" issue. For students trying to circumvent the system, we suggest teachers handle this the same way they would if a student handed in a blank paper. Would you reduce the score? Give a zero? These same rules apply using OnCourse.
