Passwords for parents and students will no longer be visible in user profiles. In an effort to increase security, hashing will now be used to block all passwords. If a user has an existing OnCourse account, and has logged in previously, their existing password will remain. This guide will explain the process for first time users who have never logged into OnCourse Connect.
ATTENTION: It is important to have an email address associated with each OnCourse Connect account as it is the most convenient method of recovering and updating passwords.
At the beginning of the school year, it’s customary for schools to send a letter to parents with their OnCourse Connect username and password as well as login instructions. A video titled, “Creating Letters and Label with a Mail Merge”, detailing this process can be found in OnCourse University.
Upon receiving these letters, parents will go to www.oncourseconnect.com and, with the username and password provided, sign in to OnCourse Connect.
Previously, parent/student OnCourse Connect passwords were visible and editable in user profiles.
Now, passwords will be hashed and uneditable. This is what a user profile will look like for a person who has an existing OnCourse Connect account and has previously logged in. These users will continue to access OnCourse Connect as they always have.
This is what a profile will look like for a user who is new to OnCourse Connect or has never logged in. The password is a string of three, randomly generated words.
For the new user, the process for logging in the first time will be a bit different. These users will be given a username and a TEMPORARYpassword, as indicated in the previous step. When they go to www.oncourseconnect.com they will sign in using this information.
Upon logging in the first time, they will be prompted to change their temporary password.
The new password will be automatically saved to the system. After changing the temporary password, the user’s profile will look like this.
If in the future a parent or student forgets their password, they have two options for retrieving it. They can either go to www.oncourseconnect.com and click on Forgot Password?.
Enter the email associated with the OnCourse Connect account, then click Recover Password.
The user’s existing password will be emailed to them.
The second option is to call their school and ask for their password to be emailed to them. To change their password, click on Grade Book and choose OnCourse Connect.
Locate the student in the navigation tree. Click on the student to reveal associated guardians.
Choose the appropriate guardian. Then choose Reset Password icon.
You will see this window and the following message.
Enter the new password and click the Reset Password button.
You will receive a confirmation message and the new password will be mailed to the guardian.
Upon logging in, they will be prompted to change their temporary password.
Resetting a student password is done the same way.
